About Jergens

In 1882, Jergens was formed by Andrew Jergens Sr. and Charles H. Geilfus in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Initially called the Jergens Soap Company, the enterprise’s first product was a coconut oil soap that would lather even in hard water. In the early 1900s, the company expanded its product offerings by acquiring few other companies. With the acquisition of Eastman Company, Jergens began selling one of the body lotions “Jergens Benzoin and Almond Lotion Compound,” later shortened to Jegens Lotion. Very soon this lotion became the largest selling hand lotion in the United States and made Jergens a household name. In the 1920s, the company began marketing the lotion to the womenand that further boosted its sales. Over the next few decades the Jergens consolidated its business and increased its market share in the personal care products industry. In 1988, Jergens was bought in by a Japanese manufacturer, Kao Corporation and continued its growth trajectory. In 1997, Jergens launched a Deep Cleansing Nose Strip that became immensely popular and won the top beauty industry awards, including Glamour magazine’s “Glammy” award for “Invention of the Year” and the 1998 CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Beauty Awards – considered the “Oscar” of the beauty industry.
