About Hugo Boss

Hugo Boss AG, based in Headquarter in Metzingen, Germany is a leading fashion and luxury apparel brand. The Hugo Boss, named after its founder, Hugo Ferdinand Boss , a German tailor who started a small workshop in Metzingen that grew up to become a huge fashion brand for men. The Hugo Group is presently owned by Italy-based Valentino Fashion Group, itself owned by British private equity firm Permira.

Post World War I, master tailor, Hugo Boss started to create workplace uniforms for industrial workers. Raincoats and protective uniforms became the tailor’s specialty that grew to a small factory very soon. During the Second World War, the production increased due to the rise in demand for uniforms. After the death of Hugo Boss in 1948, the company was managed by the founder’s grandsons, Uwe and Jochen Holy. The Holy brothers brought in modernization and transformed the company to an exclusive men’s fashion brand. They brought in new designs, colours , imported good quality light fabric for suits from Italy as well as set up manufacturing units abroad to cut down costs. They also started using strategic marketing techniques. Soon Hugo Boss became a leading manufacturer in the whole of Germany. The Boss suits came to define the new age business men who were young, dynamic and became popular in whole of Europe as well as in the US. The company went public in 1985 and was rechristened as Hugo Boss AG. Around 1992, the company suffered a few setbacks as recession had hit the market and people avoided expensive clothing. At that time, a new CEO Peter Littmann was hired to head Hugo Boss and fix up the dwindling business. Littman brought in a few strategies that redefined the brand and improved the sales. He introduced two new labels under the umbrella brand of Hugo Boss. The first one named Hugo was aimed at young professionals interested in trendy fashion. Hugo was priced slightly lower to the traditional Boss suits. Another label, Baldessarini, named after the company’s earlier designer, was a higher end design made from the highest quality of Italian fabrics; a luxury product with perfectly tailored fit that became a one word for sophistication. The regular Boss was refashioned too, doing away with big shoulders and now stood for high quality, contemporary design. Soon in 1998, a women line was launched too.

Over the years, Hugo Boss has become a brand synonymous with innovation, creativity and progress. Its strict quality measures, great designs and fits makes it stand out as a leading lifestyle and fashion brand of international standard. Along with apparel, the brand designs and licenses for accessories and fragrances too. The brand has a presence in over 90 countries around the world.
