About Gucci

Gucci is a brand that belongs to the legendary Italian Fashion House of Gucci founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921. The group company is headquartered in Florence and is owned by French multinational PPR. Guccio Gucci, a skilled craftsman in leather goods, began a small family run business of leather saddler.  Later he began to craft out leather bags for the horse men which became quite a success and spread rapidly. Guccio Gucci travelled to Paris and London and learned more about the tastes of cosmopolitan culture, aesthetics and sophistication. The first store in Italy opened in 1905 to sell saddle and saddle bags. Soon Gucci launched luxury luggage being inspired by the travelers’ bags he saw in posh hotels during his travels. In 1938, Gucci opened a store in Rome. Very soon the business expanded rapidly and his sons Aldo, Vasco, Ugo and Rodolfo joined the company.Gucci’s fine craftsmanship gained popularity and leather accessories as handbags, shoes, and his iconic ornamented loafer as well as silks and knitwear came to define finesse and luxury in the fashion world. Soon the company opened its stores in Milan. In 1953, Gucci entered the US market, taking its popularity to new heights. In 1960s, Gucci adopted the "double G" logo. Gucci continued its growth story in the 1970s. The brand launched in first fragrance in 1974, called Gucci No. 1 for women and thereafter launched several scents for both men and women.

Gucci suffered a major blow in the 1980s due to family disputes related to stock holdings, inheritance and leadership as well as operation of daily affairs. In 1989, Dawn Mello was brought in as editor and ready-to-wear designer in order to reestablish the falling reputation of the brand. In 1990, the company hired American fashion designer and film director Tom Ford, who brought along with him a breath of fresh air to the company. Ford along with Mello strived diligently to turn around the company and the diluted image of the brand. Ford, with a new vision and style, reworked various aspects of the business including visual merchandising, packaging, interior design, and advertising.

By the mid 1990s Gucci was back to where it belonged and restarted its growth; opening new stores and regaining lost faith of its customers. The company went public in October 1995. Designer Frida Giannini is the Creative Director of the Italian fashion house Gucci since 2005.
